Pet Doors installed in Overhead Garage Doors

Installing a pet door into an overhead garage door can be tricky. You need to make sure that there is enough room in the lower panel for the door so that it will fit your pet. For smaller pets, this usually is not a problem. When you begin to look at pet doors for larger pets, you need to make sure to select a pet door that will give enough clearance so the dog will not have to slouch to go through the opening. This often can cause hip and back problems. Customers with taller dogs find many times that installing a dog door in the overhead garage door simply does not allow for enough room for the door required for your pet.
With that said, make sure you pay particular attention to the exterior dimensions of the pet door. It is this dimension that needs to fit within the dimensions of your lower garage door panel. The other aspect is the thickness of the garage door. Pet doors are designed to fit different thicknesses. Make sure your selection will work for you. Finally, the pet door frame needs to have a low-profile so that there is no interference when the garage door is opened and lowered.
Due to the different considerations of this unique type of install, Moore Pet Doors has a chart below of recommended doors that work best for overhead garage doors.

Important: The door you select should be mounted so that the external frame does not overlap a joint in the overhead door. The flap may hang down when the garage door is raised. If you have any questions or concerns, please call us at 1-800-829-7876. |
