Door Mounted Pet Doors

Mounting a pet door in a door is one of the most common types of installation. It is an easy solution for allowing access for your pet or pets. Door mounted doors fall into five general categories as designated below. When making your selection, the size of the pet door and the quality of the seal is often a concern. Below you will see that the doors have a rating which is derived from customer surveys, door features and all around quality. (Quality is measured when one door is compared to other types of doors on the market).

Sometimes customers think that there are certain doors made for cats. There are cat flaps designed for cat usage, but really a cat can use most any pet door (excluding Kennel dog doors). We do however have a special section of Cat Flaps devoted to all doors that are cat friendly.

Electronic access is necessary for some customers as they may have a problem with other animals using the pet door, or they may be wanting to allow access for one pet, but keep another in the house. As you refer to the reference below, you will see that these characteristics are compared between doors.

Kennel dog doors are in a category by themselves, as these doors often are used in Kennel situations (commercial & private). They tend to be very heavy duty in their construction and function. This allows for abusive and repetitive use. They can also be used in residential situations. Refer to the chart below to see how appropriate they may be in your situation.

Door mounted pet doors are available in two distinct types: dual flap and single flap. The primary difference between these two types is in energy efficiency or insulation value. Dual flap models are recommended for all applications but are specifically designed for use in door mounts that lead directly to the outdoors. This type of pet door will create a space of still air between the flaps that will not only protect against drafts but also help to insulate the inside of the house from the outside temperatures. Single flap models are designed for applications where insulation is not a primary concern, such as interior doors or three-season porches.
